When retired Naval Chief Ray Chavez awoke that fateful morning 75 years ago in his Ewa Beach home, he knew something was wrong as he saw Japanese naval aircraft attacking Pearl Harbor.  That day forever changed his life and those of his shipmates.

Now, 75 years after that December, 1941 attack, friends are trying to raise $40,000 to bring the 104-year-old veteran and some of his surviving friends back to Pearl Harbor for what could be their last chance to pay respects for those lost in the attack.

Chavez is remarkably spry, something he attributes to a program of exercising and keeping fit.

There aren’t many survivors left of the Pearl Harbor attack–an event that plunged the United States into World War II and permanently altered our history and place in the world.
