Hawaii voter participation in the 2016 primary election was at the lowest level in 25 years.  According to KHON 2 news, only 34.8% of registered voters actually cast ballots on Saturday, 13 August 2016.

Political analyst John Hart says, “Not only low voter turnout, record low voter turnout.  People are staying home, thy’re not voting.  We’re seeing lots of races that are uncontested in the primary and that person goes right to the general.”

Voting levels often reached 50% to 60% only a few decades ago, but now it seems many people can’t be bothered to show up at polling station.  The only silver lining in this scenario is the increase in residents who cast ballots by walk-in voting or through absentee voting.
