When state health officials declared the area around the West Hawaii fishing village of Milolii a dengue fever hotspot, the residents of this small settlement decided to get aggressive about defending their village against the mosquito-borne infections. Gil Kahele encouraged his fellow residents to establish a GoFundMe account on the Internet to buy insect repellent, mosquito coils, nets, and other protective objects while vector control personnel swept the area and treated mosquito breeding areas. Kahele said the account raised $4,480, more than enough to start distribution of the mosquito kits. Aloha, Russ.
