Comment:
It’s no wonder students at Kalihi Kai Elementary School are getting sick–failure to wash properly with soap can transfer germs to clothing, food, and classroom equipment. Having soap in the classroom is a rather lame excuse. Granted, there are legitimate safety concerns about students “messing around in the restrooms”, but there’s got to be a better solution than banning basic public health practices. Perhaps, as one parent suggested, students should be made aware of what’s expected of them and the consequences of not doing sanitation procedures correctly. Would restroom monitors be a partial solution? I don’t know. Read some of the comments from parents at the end of this article…they do have a point. Common sense in our tort-dominated society is severely lacking. The DOE faces a really bad choice: Ban soap and cause potential sickness or let mayhem rule in the restroom and incur the possibility of serious injury. Apparently, the no-soap rule is used in several schools on Oahu. Aloha, Russ.
