The Hawaii Department of Education says its policy of not sending home students with head lice (ukus) conforms to recent guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Despite the recommendations from the CDC, some parents, such as Keesha Boyer say they are “upset with the letter…it’s disgusting to me.” Boyer believes keeping students with head lice in school is “counter-productive.” Dr. Kalani Brady from The John A. Burns School of Medicine at UH-Manoa says parents should not be alarmed. Brady adds “What we’ve discovered in observation is the transmission of ukus in not really high, and that’s why the DOE has made that recommendation.”
