The Hawaii Department of Education met with all 36 qualified contractors “to find out how to get the bids within the state budget, while cooling the largest number of classrooms.” The situation is especially critical at Campbell High School on Oahu, where 44 of its 149 classrooms are air conditioned.
According to DOE officials, enough agreement was reached with contractors to get the bid process started on Monday, 01 August 2016.
Installation of cooling systems will begin as the funds are released.
The Department of Education is considering a proposal to declare “heat days”, but that decision hasn’t been made yet.
