On Monday, 01 August 2016, approximately 300 people attended a public meeting at the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu to discuss the proposed expansion of the Papahanamokuakea National Marine Monument. Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz has submitted legislation that would expand the area to protect marine life.
Some fishermen, local chefs, and others, including former Hawaii Governor George Ariyoshi oppose the plan. Ariyoshi says, “We should be able to decide what to do with the ocean.”
Another public meeting on the issue will be held today, 02 August 2016, at Kauai Community College.
