KHON 2 investigative reporter Gina Mangieri says the city of Honolulu will face fines of up to $25,000 per day per incident and other penalties for a massive sewage spill at the Ala Moana pump that flooded streams and streets with raw sewage nearly a year ago.
According to documents found by KHON 2 News, the Ala Moana pump was unattended, and “a predawn overflow alarm at a different facility didn’t lead to the proper personnel alert.”
Honolulu City Council members called the incident a failure of oversight and personnel management. Corrective actions are underway to see that such events don’t occur in the future.
