Following a helicopter tour of storm-damaged Iao Valley on Maui, Hawaii Governor David Ige said he would ask for a presidential disaster declaration for an estimated $15 million damage done by heavy rains and flooding.
More than 20 homes were damaged by the storm and major portions of the road serving the area were swept away. Officials said that costly recovery efforts “will take months” adding that “the storm damage was an eye opener for Ige, who surveyed the area Tuesday.”
The original path of the Iao Stream may have to be restored in order to protect homes and rebuild the road into the area. Kepaniwai Park and Iao Valley State Park remain closed because of extensive damage.
