Waipahu High School sent a letter home to parents on Thursday, telling them that fundraising money was taken and that police were called in to investigate. The money was to be used for an end-of-year athletic banquet.
Dason Santana, who plays on the Waipahu JV football team, says “I was really mad…we put in a lot of work.”
Although the Honolulu Police Department says the exact amount of cash and checks taken from the school is unknown, it was believed the total donation was less than $20,000.
Despite the loss of funds, Waipahu Football coach Bryson Carvalho said the banquet will be held, with him paying for the event out of his own pocket.
