Hawaii public school teachers have shared what they call “shocking” photos of “broken chairs and broken desks at various schools across the state.”  Although some schools, such as Dole Middle School, are getting replacement furniture, many schools throughout the state will have to make do until the Department of Education gets more money to buy furniture and other equipment.

HSTA president Corey Rosenlee says the furniture issue shows that “we are not investing in our kids.”

DOE chief financial officer Amy Kunz says some money is coming down from the State Legislature, which is “a step in the right direction”, but more resources are needed if the DOE is to resolve the issue statewide. Kunz adds that under the current student – weighted program, principals can change school priorities and give furniture and equipment purchases a higher priority.
