According to data compiled by KHON 2 News, Hawaii is ranked the 3rd worst state for retirees. There’s nothing new here. We pay dearly for the privilege of a decent climate, an abundance of sunshine, excellent ocean recreation resources, and a better quality of life. Like many things in life, comfort, convenience, and a generally peaceful environment exacts a cost. In Hawaii that means limited housing, expensive food and fuel, and often limited medical facilities, especially on the neighbor islands. This trend has continued for decades. All of this was foretold by UH-Manoa professor Randal Roth in his 1992 book called “The Price of Paradise.” This book is a basic primer on surviving in Hawaii on a limited income. Aloha, Russ.
