Comment:

According to NOAA meteorologist Robert Ballard, “a surprisingly dynamic cell” of thunderstorms and lightning brought a large amount of rain and some damage to an area between Papaikou and Pepeekeo on Hawaii Island.  Radar showed very heavy rainfall of one to two inches per hour Friday night (25 March 2016), enough to put the island under a flash flood watch until 11:30 p.m.  Water “gushing down” Highway 19 forced traffic to stop for at least 45 minutes.  The storm also damaged a home and a greenhouse in Papaikou.  A waterspout was seen from the Hilo International Airport, although the mini-twister didn’t come ashore.  Despite the heavy downpour, March has only receive about half of it normal amount of rainfall.
