A two-year study conducted by the University of Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology concludes that “sharks preferred the ‘Maui Nui Complex’, which consists of Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe.”‘ The Maui Nui Shelf is “an attractive habitat for sharks arriving from elsewhere in Hawaii.”
Researchers believe that shark behavior really hasn’t changed much over the past years. What has changed is the increasing number of people in the shark feeding grounds “as ocean recreation becomes more and more popular.”
If you plan a vacation on Maui, please be aware that hungry tiger sharks enjoy the same waters you do.
